Europe Day 4 – Bus City Tour, Gauti, Gelato, Sangria, Elves, and World Cup

This entry is part 4 of 14 in the series Europe July 2010

Good Evening from Espana,

The fireworks are currently going off outside the window with Espana scoring the first goal at the World Cup in South Africa. The apartments upstairs, downstairs, and people along the street are loudly cheering.

The time difference made waking up today slightly easier, up at 09:15. After eating a fresh pastry and orange juice, we visited the Barcelona Tourist location at PT Cataluna. We explored the city via the City Bus lines, sitting upstairs for the Blue line and downstairs for the red line. Lunch was near the University, yummy Gnochi with four cheese sauce was served up. This allowed us to see a variety of locations throughout the city,, from Gauti Catedrals to historical BCN Olympic Venue locations. Tomorrow we will return to a few to explore more in depth.

After exploring the city we returned back for a quick break, and allow the parents a nap. We returned back out for Gelato, exploring, and dinner. I enjoyed Mint Chip, Chocolate and Dulces De Leche Gelato.

After venturing through the Barcelona Catedral during mass, we wandered to grab Sangria in what I would call a Keebler Elf Pub, with small tables and all. We then went back to La Rambla to have dinner at the Plaza. The crowds began to form outside pubs, with 100?s of people sporting the flag of Espana in around them as a flag, in their shirts, jackets, pants, etc. Dinner was an enjoyable hamburger, and the night was very entertaining with friends and family. The walk back yielded a person “celebrating” with my father while slipping his hand in his pocket to try to steal his belongings. Luckily, we saw from behind, and he was able to quickly see what the persons motives were.

The M80s are going off outside my window, Congrats to Espana for winning The World Cup, 2010!!! I would imagine a great sense of pride and celebration is starting throughout the city as I type this at 23:05.

Europe Day 3 – Cathedrals, Mexican food, napping

This entry is part 3 of 14 in the series Europe July 2010

After sleeping in to 1300, the day seemed to pass quickly by us. Marsha arrived and she enjoyed a hot shower before we departed out to grab a bite in Barcelona.

We stumbled upon a Mexican restaurant along a side street from La Rambla. The food was tasty and the mojito with raspberries was incredible. We continued to walk along La Rambla to the water front , where we said farewell to Marsha so she could nap.

Daniel and I explored side streets and enjoyed sitting in an outside cafe for a few hours talking and drinking beer, while snacking on croquettes con pollo y jamon. We returned to the room to take papa to McDonalds for a quick bite at 2215. Marsha caught up on sleep after 14 hours of well deserved rest.

Europe Day 2 – Barcelona – Exploring Yesterday and Sleeping In

This entry is part 2 of 14 in the series Europe July 2010

We explored the city of Barcelona until midnight when we returned back to the apartment. The city continued to be very alive upon our return, in a small resemblance of Vegas, asking if I wanted to attend a party, or club, etc.

Yesterday was a beautiful day in the city, we walked along Las Ramblas to the waterfront, from there we walked throughout the various areas. The beach is very beautiful here, with very large crowds, and some bodies that would make you opt to hold off eating for a while (or forever).

We enjoyed sharing some tapas and Sangria at a restaurant along the water. Along the way back, Papa was craving a sweet, McDonalds was a quick, but yummy snack (cheeseburger too).

After falling asleep by 1, Papa woke me to ask if I had planned on waking up at all today, being it was 12:20.

Up and showered now, half the day gone, but it’s vacation! Mom2 landed at BCN and we will be meeting up with her shortly.

What major city would not have street fairs, reminds me of 3rd Street Promenade.

Daniel along La Rambla in Barcelona.

The Farmers Market.

A monument for Christopher Columbus.

A pristine yacht in the harbor.

The beach in Barcelona at 21:00.

Sangria and Tapas along the Mediterranean.

Daniel along the beachfront area at sunset (21:45).

A little late in the day, but around 13:00 is a good time to be dressed and ready to head out!

Europe Day 1 – Atlanta to Barcelona

This entry is part 1 of 14 in the series Europe July 2010

I managed to depart on time yesterday and complete all my tasks. Atlanta Hartsfield was busy, but made it to Concourse E quickie with 2 hours to spare. My father ( Papa) was waiting for us, and Randy joined us while we waited.

Pushed back on time, watched Date Night which was a bit boring. The flight crew seemed snarky. Took aerobus to the apartment where we met up with Juan Carlos, a Cuban native with very unique blue eyes.

The apartment has two bedrooms, fridge, washer, and is in a quiet area only 200m from las ramblas. The free wi fi is just an added bonus. Papa and Daniel are sleeping and Marsha arrives tomorrow. More to come from Barcelona! Beautiful weather in forecast.

One more full work day… Must Pack!

I came home from work around 7 with full intention to be packed, giving me tomorrow night to relax.

I managed to complete the pack this list but no dent made yet! Must get packing!! Pic shows I have a lot to add to my packing list …

Vacation Time Quickly Approaching

Vacation to Europe is quickly approaching, departing on Thursday. The flights are secured, accommodations ready and anticipation builds! A 2.5 day work week is not a bad way to start a vacation…

United Airlines – MileagePlus Landing Page Refreshed (Great job)

United Airlines refreshed the mileageplus landing page for its members of its frequent flyer program. The colors are vivid, and it’s very easy to navigate. Great to see how they highlight the promotions, upgrades, and current activity toward EQS / EQM thresholds. The page is very fluid, great job United! A mouseover the icon next to key words gives clear definitions of the context UA is referring to. I will still miss the iconic Tulip when it departs…

Delta Airlines – Website Enhancement – Add to Calendar (PHEW)

Delta Logo SmallArranging my upcoming trips, I hopped on Delta.com to download the files to my calendar. I would typically download it twice, and then adjust one of them to be for the outbound and inbound. While on Delta.com today, I see the link to a summary of itineraries and when adding to outlook, I can choose which leg. United.bomb had this functionality but they later removed it, not sure if it is back, since I don’t fly them.

Thanks Delta for enhancing Delta.com for the better, makes it easier to manage outlook.

Update: SkyPriority Boarding Process Reverts Back (Slightly)

This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series Sky Priority

Delta Logo SmallIt has been a while since I have updated on Delta and SkyPriority, work has been a bit hectic. On May 26, 2010, Delta communicated that the boarding process for SkyPriority will be augmented based on customer feedback. The change in the boarding process is very positive and takes into account the many challenges I experienced on my trip to Manila. While the Silver Medallion seem beyond angry, recognition for those with 50k or more a year on your airline should occur, and those in First/Business Elite should be priority (though Non-Revs that have confirmed seating are viewed as full fare passengers). Thanks for listening Delta to the customers on this “enhancement”.

Starting June 1st, we will revert back to advance boarding for BusinessElite®, First and Business Class customers. The modified boarding order will be:

  • Pre-boarding for customers requiring assistance
  • NEW — Boarding of BusinessElite, First and Business Class customers*
  • Zone 1 boarding for Diamond, Platinum and Gold Medallion® members and SkyTeam® Elite Plus customers
  • Zone 2 boarding for Silver Medallion members and SkyTeam Elite customers
  • Zones 3 and 4 boarding for all other customers

And remember, customers in BusinessElite, First and Business Class, Zone 1 and Zone 2 can board anytime after their zone is called using the Sky Priority boarding lane.
